Views from the Edge...

Peggy Edge, Senior Minister

What a difference two weeks makes!  The church office has a new look!  Thanks to the volunteer efforts of the Property Committee, the dividing wall is down, holes in the ceiling from former light fixtures are gone, paneling is repaired and painted, and new carpet at wholesale price is on its way.  And then new “used” furniture gifted from AEP will be moved in.  Thanks to all who have helped with this project we have a fresh space to receive guests and conduct business every day.  Cory and I are most grateful.

In the same amount of time that all of this construction work has been happening, many conversations have been had regarding the possibility of nesting Zo Christian Church, a group of Burmese refugees.   Rev. Dean Phelps, Associate Regional Minister of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Indiana, had a second meeting with that congregation following their expressed interest in becoming a Disciples congregation.  They are in a discernment process, as are we.

I am thankful for the time to discern.  Many questions are being posed, and, hopefully, we will find answers to them all.  Listening to one another is important.  I am confident that this journey will make us stronger in clarifying our mission at North Christian.  In roughly two more weeks, the Special Committee will meet again on Tuesday, August 17th.  Feel free to express your thoughts to members of that group who are investigating the possibility for us: George Weatherford (chair), Ed Spencer, Bob Alexander, Ellen Wilson, Ruth Wiegmann, Rosalie Hamilton, Michelle Race and others who are listening.

On a personal note, I have been more diligent over the past couple of weeks to get some exercise!  Walking 2 ½ miles several times a week has made a huge difference for me.  Many of you are also on a course of living healthier.  Finding the courage and motivation to do so is often easier with the encouragement of another.  Yes, there are clubs and fitness coaches who do this professionally.  But some of the healthiest congregations that I know of also invest themselves in church bowling, basketball, or softball leagues.  Maybe Krista Hedrick will teach us all to play soccer!  Now that would really get us all in shape!  Ask yourself what constructive thing you have devoted yourself to in the past couple of weeks.  Pray about what God would have us do in the next two weeks.

Grace and peace,
